There is nothing quite like the feeling of driving your first Tesla home. The instant torque, the minimalist cabin, and the cutting-edge technology make it feel like you are driving the future.

At Elevate Motor Co, we believe that technology is a wonderful tool to help us connect, travel, and care for our families. However, as with any major life investment, it pays to move forward with wisdom and clear eyes.

After owning five Teslas, our team, (Carson, Mike, and Perry), have seen the same costly habits happen again and again. Some of these mistakes are so common that even self-proclaimed EV experts recommend them.

If you want to protect your finances and enjoy truly affordable EV ownership, let’s look at the seven most expensive mistakes new Tesla owners make, plus one bonus mistake that could cost you thousands of dollars before you even plug your car in.

1. Misusing the Frameless Doors

Tesla doors are beautiful, but they feature electronic door-actuating systems and frameless glass. Many new owners, and their passengers, get into the habit of closing the door by grabbing the glass or opening it using the emergency manual-release latch instead of the electronic button.

While a manual release is required for emergencies, using it regularly can bypass the automatic window-drop mechanism. Over time, pulling the manual release or slamming the door by the glass can damage the window regulator, door frame, or rubber weather seals.

Repair bills for this type of damage can quickly climb between $1,000 and $2,000.

Tip: Gently teach your passengers to use the electronic release button. It takes a little getting used to, but your wallet will thank you.

2. Leaving Sentry Mode Running 24/7

Sentry Mode is one of Tesla’s best features, acting as a built-in security guard. But keeping it active 24/7 everywhere you go can lead to unnecessary vampire drain.

While Sentry Mode has become much more efficient over the last few years, running it continuously means your car’s onboard computer cannot fully go to sleep. This consumes additional electricity and causes the battery to discharge and recharge more frequently.

Over time, that additional cycling can create unnecessary wear on the battery.

To prevent this, use the touchscreen settings to exclude safe locations such as:

  • Your home garage
  • A trusted family member’s house
  • Your workplace, when appropriate
  • Other locations where continuous recording is unnecessary

This keeps your vehicle protected when you are at the grocery store or parked somewhere unfamiliar while allowing it to rest when it is safe.

3. Damaging the Battery’s State of Health (SOH)

Battery health is one of the most important factors affecting an EV’s long-term value.

In the past, used-car buyers largely had to guess about battery condition. Today, dealerships and informed buyers can use advanced diagnostic tools to evaluate the battery’s (SOH).

Two Teslas can have the same age and mileage but receive very different trade-in offers if one has experienced significantly more battery degradation.

Leaving your car sitting at 100% charge or allowing it to remain near 0%, especially in extreme heat, can contribute to unnecessary battery degradation. When it comes time to trade in or sell your car, poor battery health could directly lower its value.

To protect the battery:

  • Avoid leaving the car at maximum or minimum charge for extended periods.
  • Follow Tesla’s recommended daily charge limit for your specific battery type.
  • Keep your charging habits consistent.
  • Avoid allowing the car to sit nearly empty.
  • Park in the shade or a garage when possible during extreme summer heat.

The occasional road-trip charge to 100% is not the problem. The mistake is leaving the battery at an extreme state of charge for long periods when it is unnecessary.

4. Relying Exclusively on Supercharging

Tesla’s Supercharger network is incredibly convenient, but treating public fast chargers as your personal garage can become an expensive habit.

Over a five-year period, relying solely on Supercharging can cost up to $8,000 more than charging at home, depending on your electricity rates, mileage, and local Supercharger pricing.

Frequent fast charging can also expose the battery to more heat than slower overnight charging. Tesla’s battery-management system is designed to protect the pack, but home or workplace charging is generally the better option for routine use.

For the best balance of convenience, cost, and battery health, aim to complete most of your charging at home or work using Level 1 or Level 2 charging.

5. Abusing Tesla’s Instant Acceleration

Tesla’s instant electric acceleration is highly addictive. However, launching the car at every opportunity wears out expensive tires much faster and destroys your driving efficiency.

EV tires may include features such as:

  • Sound-deadening foam
  • Efficiency-focused tread compounds
  • Higher load ratings
  • Reinforced construction
  • Low-rolling-resistance designs

A decent set of name-brand tires for a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y can cost between $1,200 and $1,600.

If you launch the car at every green light, you may find yourself replacing those tires after only 15,000 miles. Aggressive acceleration also uses considerably more energy, reducing your real-world driving range.

We are not saying you should never enjoy your Tesla’s performance. Just avoid turning every stoplight into a drag strip.

Practice smooth acceleration during normal commuting and save the occasional full-power launch for when you can enjoy it safely and responsibly.

6. Choosing Looks Over Practicality With Wheels and Tires

Larger wheels may make your Tesla look sportier, but they come with several expensive compromises that many buyers overlook.

Tesla’s larger 20-inch and 21-inch wheels generally use tires with thinner sidewalls. This can result in:

  • A harsher ride
  • More expensive replacement tires
  • Reduced driving efficiency
  • Less protection against potholes
  • A greater risk of wheel or tire damage
  • Potentially reduced real-world range

Larger wheels are also typically heavier. That additional rotating mass requires more energy to accelerate, which can reduce efficiency.

By comparison, Tesla’s smaller factory wheels usually use tires with thicker sidewalls. These wheels may not look as aggressive, but they often deliver better ride quality, greater efficiency, less expensive replacement tires, and more protection against potholes.

This is especially important if you live in an area with rough roads or regularly take long road trips.

When replacing your tires, you do not necessarily need a tire specifically marketed as an “EV tire.” However, you must confirm that it meets the correct specifications for your vehicle, including:

  • Tire size
  • Speed rating
  • Load index
  • Recommended tire pressure

Many Teslas require an XL, or Extra Load, tire to safely support the vehicle’s weight and operating pressure.

Tip: Before buying a Tesla with Performance wheels or installing oversized aftermarket wheels, calculate the added tire cost and consider how the reduced comfort, efficiency, and pothole protection will affect your daily driving.

7. Overspending on Paint Protection Film

It is no secret that Tesla paint can be relatively thin, which leads many online forums and influencers to insist that you must spend thousands of dollars on full-body Paint Protection Film, commonly called PPF.

Depending on the installer and the amount of coverage, PPF can cost anywhere from several hundred dollars for one panel to between $5,000 and $8,000 for an entire vehicle.

Unless you are protecting a rare collectible, spending thousands of dollars to cover the paint on a mass-produced daily driver may not make financial sense.

In many cases, a full PPF installation costs more than repairing or repainting the bumper or hood later if it becomes chipped. PPF also does not last forever and may eventually require removal or replacement.

You may still decide that PPF is worthwhile because you value having nearly flawless paint. That is a personal choice. The mistake is believing that every Tesla owner must purchase it or that the expense will automatically be recovered when the vehicle is sold.

For most owners, keeping that money in savings may provide more practical protection than wrapping the entire car.

Bonus Mistake: Over-Engineering Your Home Charger

Before spending thousands of dollars upgrading your home electrical panel to support a massive 60-amp or 80-amp charging setup, calculate how much driving you actually do each day.

The average American drives fewer than 40 miles per day. Depending on the vehicle, outlet, and charging conditions, a standard Level 1 charging cable connected to a regular household outlet may recover enough range overnight to cover many drivers’ daily needs.

Drivers who need faster charging may be well served by a modest 240-volt, 30-amp circuit rather than the maximum charging configuration their Tesla can accept.

Many homes also already have access to a suitable circuit through:

  • An existing garage outlet
  • A dryer outlet
  • A 30-amp circuit
  • A 50-amp outlet
  • A smart load-sharing device

Smart splitters and energy-management systems can allow an EV charger to share an existing circuit with an appliance. The vehicle charges when the appliance is not operating, potentially eliminating the need for a costly electrical-panel upgrade.

We highly recommend starting with the versatile Tesla Mobile Connector and seeing how well it fits your lifestyle before committing to expensive electrical work.

However, do not cut corners on safety. EV charging creates a continuous electrical load, so your outlet, wiring, charging equipment, and installation must be properly rated and inspected when necessary.

The goal is not to buy the cheapest charging equipment available. The goal is to avoid spending thousands of dollars on charging speed you will rarely need.

By avoiding these common financial traps, you can keep your ownership costs low, protect your Tesla’s long-term value, and make the driving experience more enjoyable.
