Mastering Public EV Charging: An Essential Etiquette Guide for Every Driver
Navigating the Public Charging Landscape
Electric vehicles are rapidly becoming a common sight on our roads, bringing with them a new frontier: public charging. With thousands of brand new EV drivers hitting the pavement daily, DC fast chargers often feel less like organized stations and more like the wild west. The truth is, no one really teaches you proper EV charging etiquette at the dealership. So, whether you're a seasoned Tesla owner, cruising in a Rivian, or zipping around in a Chevy Bolt, understanding these unspoken rules is crucial for a positive experience for all.
Today, we're breaking down the most common errors and the absolute worst charging habits, from mildly annoying to downright infuriating. Our goal at Elevate Motor Co. is to help you make informed decisions and enjoy your EV journey, and that includes making public charging less stressful.
The Unspoken Rules of the Charging Station
Give Others Space: The Stall Stalker & Power Sharing
Imagine pulling up to a charging station, only to have someone park right next to you, even if other stalls are open. We call this the 'urinal rule' - give people some space! But it's not just about comfort; it's about power. At older Tesla V2 Superchargers, for example, stalls sharing the same number (like 1A and 1B) literally share a power cabinet. If you plug in next to someone already charging, you could instantly cut their charging speed in half and double their wait time. You can identify a V2 Supercharger by a silver collar on the handle, a 150 kW limit in the Tesla app, and only A and B designations on the stalls.
This isn't just a Tesla issue. Stations like Electrify America also use balanced chargers that allocate power, and many public Level 2 chargers split their output when two cars plug in. A Chevy Silverado EV driver trying to charge their massive battery does not want to split their already slow trickle with a smaller plug-in hybrid. Always aim to leave a buffer spot if possible.
Charge Smart, Not to 100%: The Clueless Camper
Here’s a secret dealerships often don't tell you: an EV's charging curve falls off a cliff after 80%. Sitting there to get from 80% to 100% can literally take as long as it took you to get from 10% to 80%! If there's a line of people waiting, do the considerate thing: unplug at 80% and get back on the road. You rarely need that last 5-10% unless you're truly on the edge of your range. This is especially critical for older EVs like the first-gen Chevy Bolt, which have notoriously slow fast-charging curves. Don't block the grid for that last bit of range.
Avoid Costly Mistakes: The Idle Newbie & Fees
Want to make enemies at a charging station and hurt your wallet? Plug in your car, walk away, and never check your app notifications. This is the 'idle newbie' - the person who wanders into Target, forgets other people exist, and leaves their car plugged in long after it's done. Both Tesla Superchargers and Electrify America impose idle fees (from 40 cents to over a dollar per minute) if your car remains connected past its charging completion, especially during busy times. A quick check of your phone could save you a $30 parking penalty. Always be mindful of your charging status.
Respect the Queue: The Line Jumper
Unlike gas stations, public EV charging tips for queuing are less clear. Lines often form organically. When you pull up, don't just blindly dart for the open spot. Look around to see if there's already a queue. Supercharger locations might have 8-10 stalls, but stations like EVgo or Electrify America often only have four, sometimes awkwardly placed. If you see occupied EVs idling nearby, you're probably not the only one waiting. Roll down your window, communicate with others, and patiently wait your turn.
Tow with Care: The Trailer Blocker
This one often goes unnoticed by those who don't tow, but it's a major point of frustration. If you're driving a normal car without a trailer, do not park in a dedicated pull-through stall just because backing into a spot makes you nervous. Leave it open for the trucks that actually need it. When you steal that spot, the guy with the trailer has to park sideways, potentially blocking three to four chargers just to get some juice. And to our trailer-towing friends: unless you have a dedicated pull-through available, please unhitch your trailer. Parking sideways across half the station to save three minutes of unhitching is simply inconsiderate.
Leave No Trace: The Station Slob
There's zero excuse for this one. Leaving the charging cable on the dirt, or your empty coffee cup on the pedestal, is unacceptable. Your mom doesn't work at Electrify America, so clean up after yourself! Leaving cables on the ground allows dirt, water, snow, and ice to get into the pins, which can cause chargers to fail, overheat, or slow down for the next person. Treat the EV charger better than you would a gas pump. When you're done, click the handle securely back into the holster. And if the trash can is overflowing, just take your trash with you.
Beyond the Plug: A Community Mindset
Look, the transition to electric vehicles is an exciting journey, but it also requires a little bit of community effort. When it comes to the golden rule, Jesus said it best: "Treat others as you would like to be treated." At a charging station, that translates into something pretty simple: have common sense, be aware of your surroundings, and don't be a jerk. If we all follow these simple public EV charging tips, road trip charging will be way less stressful and more enjoyable for everyone.
